The MARVEL project is an EU-funded initiative. aspires the convergence of a set of technologies in the areas of AI, analytics, multimodal perception, software engineering, and HPC as part of an Edge-Fog-Cloud Computing Continuum paradigm, to support data-driven real-time application workflows and decision-making in modern cities, showcasing the potential to address societal challenges very effectively.

MARVEL addresses the rising challenges in the Big Data Value chain regarding data acquisition, data analysis and processing, data storage and curation, and data visualisation, and prioritises open science and open data through sharing a Data Corpus to drive research and innovation in multimodal processing and analytics. 

Expected Impact

Big Data is expected to provide solutions for major societal challenges in Europe, such as improved efficiency in healthcare information processing, social security, public safety and wellbeing, transportation and many more. MARVEL will contribute to the broader familiarisation of citizens to Big Data technologies and accelerate their adoption through increasing awareness of their benefits and value, thus fostering more informed, educated, and participatory citizens. Consequently, this will have a significant impact on the acquisition of digital skills that will lead to the cover increasing need for higher added value jobs in the fields of data science, AI and software engineering.

MARVEL takes into account the butterfly effect and its impact on Smart Cities together with the necessity to use data more strategically. Consequently, MARVEL is expected to realise societal opportunities in the Smart City domain by exploiting efficient proactive processing and reliable predictions based on sound/image recognition analyses to provide (almost) real-time responses to incidents happening at different locations within the city. The provision of smart services related to public safety, well-being/care and transportation in urban environments will have a profound impact on the quality of life of citizens who comprise an indispensable endowment to smart cities. 

Collaboration with Emeralds

The synergy between the MARVEL project and the EMERALDS project, particularly in terms of communication and dissemination, has been instrumental in promoting each other's events and enhancing their respective outreach efforts. Through collaborative efforts, these projects have effectively leveraged their platforms to amplify the visibility and impact of their initiatives within the Smart Cities and urban mobility domains.

One notable instance of this synergistic approach was the mutual promotion of key events such as the MARVEL 3rd info day webinar and the EMERALDS first webinar on Extreme Scale Urban Mobility Data Analytics as a Service. The MARVEL project, aimed at advancing Smart Cities through innovative solutions, organized the 3rd info day webinar as a platform for Smart Cities enthusiasts to gain insights into the latest advancements and solutions offered by the project. 

Similarly, the EMERALDS project's first webinar on Extreme Scale Urban Mobility Data Analytics as a Service provided a forum for discussing the latest advances in urban mobility data analytics and its potential to improve mobility and transportation systems in cities worldwide.

By mutually promoting each other's events, MARVEL and EMERALDS not only broadened their audience reach but also facilitated cross-pollination of ideas and expertise between the Smart Cities and urban mobility sectors. This collaborative approach not only strengthened the dissemination efforts of both projects but also fostered a synergistic environment conducive to driving innovation and addressing urban challenges comprehensively.
